Trick #36: The overdub chart

When beginning album production, consider putting together a spreadsheet with all of the songs in the columns and all of the possible instruments that need to be overdubbed in the rows.

Gray out the cells where an instrument is not needed for a song.

Put a “x” in any cell where the overdub has been completed.

The advantage to working this way is that you can knock off the same instrument for more than one song during a session. I mean, while you’ve got the mics up or the instrument plugged in, why not try recording that instrument for more than one song?

You’ll also have a good idea on how much progress you still need to make on overdubs. It can be motivating to see all of the empty squares fill up with checkmarks.
